Bonarda has many faces, and one of the modern—perhaps the most modern—is represented in this wine from very old vineyards planted about 80 years ago on the sandy soils of San Martín, in the hot eastern Mendoza, where this grape has its Argentine kingdom. In a year that was cooler than usual, the ripe red fruits have connected on the palate with intense and penetrating acidity. It smells like bonarda, but tastes of something else. This is a firmer and more vertical face of the bonarda we know.

This red from the winery's Bonarda single vineyard series comes from low-altitude vineyards planted at 650 feet in San Martin, located in Mendoza's warmer eastern region. The nose reveals hints of smoke blended with cherry and plum. A firm palate delivers savory notes of rosemary, ripe red fruit and hints of tobacco. It has just enough acidity to lift the flavors and freshen the finish.
